The Illinois Green Schools Project is back for the 2023-24 school year!

The Illinois Green Schools Project registration is now open! This is a year-long sustainability challenge designed for K-12 schools across Illinois. Gather students, teachers, and staff from your school to form a green team and meet regularly to design and implement a year-long, no-to low-cost, sustainability initiative at your school.

Now in its 4th year, The Illinois Green Schools Project has engaged hundreds of teachers and thousands of students by providing the necessary skills, resources, and guidance for participants to advance their schools down the path of net-zero. No matter where your school is at, we want to help you reduce your school’s impact and waste of energy, water, and/or materials.

School registration is now officially open! Sign up on our website to gain access to useful tools and dedicated support:

  • Free learning subscriptions & educator certification
  • A Green Schools Mentor to help throughout the year
  • An opportunity to apply for a mini grant of up to $500
  • Communicative staff that are always available to help

Schools can register to join until September 29, 2023

Last year, ILGSP included 39 schools, 170 educators, 1790 students, and 47 professional mentors. Projects impacted their schools in so many creative ways, ranging from shoreline restoration efforts to energy waste campaigns, to initiation and development of composting programs and transitioning to compostable lunch trays and silverware.

We know that coming up with a project that's right for you can be overwhelming! That's why we've compiled all sorts of useful resources to help you explore ways to reduce your school's impact!
