Thomas Elementary: Composting

  • Project Type: Waste Reduction, Collaboration with non-profit
  • Students: 16
  • Staff: 3
  • Mentors: April Bartnick
  • Location: Carbondale, IL
  • Grade Level: 2nd & 3rd Grade

In collaboration with a local non-profit, Thomas Elementary is introducing composting to the 2nd and 3rd grade. During the school’s breakfast and lunch times, students place their unwanted, uneaten in buckets, where it is collected to be composted in two ways: vermiculture and open compost bins. They also handoff some of the compost to a nearby non-profit community garden, Little Red Hen Garden.

The faculty leaders plan on continuing the composting project next year with the help of Tiger Council, which is the school’s student council organization. Tiger Council helps monitor what food scraps are placed in the compost bin and educates other students about compostable materials.
