Western Springs Home Tour: Age in Place LEED Platinum Home

Join Illinois Green Alliance for a LEED Platinum (Pending) home tour in Western Springs, Illlinois! Attendees may choose a ticket time for either 3:30 PM or 4:30 PM on November 2.

During this home tour, attendees will learn how this project focused on the owner’s desire to make their new home able to accommodate their aging needs while also prioritizing a high level of sustainability. The ground floor is accessible and has all living functions along with a bedroom suite. With second floor guest/grandkids’ rooms and flexible-use rooms, the spatial concept was to unify upstairs and downstairs under a sweeping, sheltering roof, which faces south for solar PV. The home’s upfront carbon footprint is minimized through low-embodied energy materials (“concrete-less” slab, double stud walls and roof structure insulated with cellulose, salvaged brick for site walls and greenhouse), and its operational energy is minimized through Passive House design principles.

This project is pursuing LEED Platinum certification in order to meet the owner’s desire to ensure the project was focused on metrics related to site, water, and materials, in addition to energy. Learn about the design principles of this project during the tour!
