Join Illinois Green Alliance to learn how a diverse array of construction industry professionals are addressing the global waste crisis through their work.

Considered the largest consumer of raw materials in the world, the construction sector accounts for 50% of global resource extraction. Annually, millions of tons of waste are created by the construction, renovation, operations, and demolition of buildings. As the third largest city in the U.S., with millions of square feet currently under construction, Chicago is a key player in the global waste dilemma.

Find out how three construction and waste management professionals from various sectors of the industry are addressing zero waste in their projects using tools like TRUE certification, credits from LEED v4 and v4.1 and more to help achieve their project waste goals.

This session will address the life cycle impact of materials from demolition through construction and promote innovative uses of items that would typically be destined for the waste stream. Speakers will share information that will help participants transform their supply chains, achieve important certifications like TRUE and LEED, and move their organizations forward while reducing the environmental impact of their operations, cutting costs, and addressing the important needs of their clients.

Speakers will also address how these strategies create new streams of work, wealth, and resources by influencing jobs, reducing carbon impacts and environmental degradation, and supporting multiple social and environmental justice issues.

Speakers:

  • Lindsay Landwehr-Fasules, Director of Sustainability, Turner Construction
  • John Mlade, Director, Sustainable and Healthy Environments, Wight & Company
  • Stuart Vanden Heuvel, Sustainability Program Manager, Rheaply
