Join Illinois Green for a hybrid workshop to explore why it’s critical to incorporate energy modeling
during the early design phase, examine accessible software to understand energy modeling basics, and hear more about the real-world decisions that can be made from the information early modeling
provides.

We’ll kick off this workshop with a brief presentation from Ajit Naik of Baumann Consulting that
examines when and why energy modeling is used on a project, and then dive into an exploration of
RETScreen, a software tool for existing building energy modeling. Ben Heymer of Slipstream will then
walk attendees through how Sketchbox can be used for concept modeling for new construction.
The presentation portion of the workshop will also allow time to dive deeper into the lessons and
insights that both engineers provided as well as a brief Q&A session. After this, attendees will be broken into small groups to explore one of the example software models, where they will respond to prompts that will provide a better understanding of how the model can inform decision making.

Agenda:
1:30 – 2:00 PM | Doors Open, Networking
2:00 – 3:30 PM | Introductions, Presentations, Q&A

  • Ajit Naik, Baumann Consulting
    • Energy Modeling Introduction
    • RETScreen & Existing Building Energy Modeling
  • Ben Heymer, Slipstream
    • Sketchbox & Concept Modeling

3:30 – 4:30 PM | Small Group Activity

  • Attendees will be put into small groups with a building and problem prompt to model live in the
selected software. After working time wraps up, groups will present their findings to the cohort
and have time to discuss any issues or questions they ran into along the way with fellow
    attendees and speakers.
