Elmhurst, IL // Spring 2021

The Eco Club at York High School participated in the SCARCE Sustainable Design Challenge to design and build a model of a sustainable building.

The Green Schools Mentors provided support by sharing resources around sustainable sites and landscaping, along with resources about renewable energy and building decarbonization technology for students to utilize during their research. Additionally, a local architect presented on LEED building and design, and the students participated in a tour and discussion of a recently completed facility set to receive Passive House Institute and Source Zero certification. Through these interactions, the students were also able to learn about careers in sustainable design from local professionals in the fields of architecture, design and engineering. All of these resources and experiences ultimately helped the students develop their sustainable design that was submitted in April, with winners announced later in May.
